and learning experience.

hen discussing the
connection between residence hall
design and student experience, the
conversation often turns to four
salient themes of interest regarding
residence hall design: exploring
student ownership and territoriality,
understanding the balance of common
space and amenities, utilizing
student living unit configuration,
and employing safety and security
measures that mitigate risks and
enhance student well-being.
While most campus housing
professionals are comfortable
discussing such topics in bricks-andmortar terms, where it can become
less clear is when they try to tie these
concepts to the student experience
and success and to even clearly

define what student experience and
success really mean. How can student
experience and success be connected
to these building design features in
meaningful ways?
Student experience and student
success are two distinct outcomes
despite the fact that the two terms
are often used interchangeably.
Caution should be taken against such
practice. Instead, one should consider
student experiences as behavioral
and psychological constructs directly
impacted by building design, such
as the students' sense of community
and their sense of belonging. These
may manifest themselves through
quantifiable items such as the amount
of interaction between students,
positive study habits, engagement
with academic programs and support
services, involvement with student
activities, and others.

Popular theory holds that these
student experiences - ones that are
impacted by residence hall design
- will then impact student success
outcomes such as retention, grade
point average, graduation persistence,
and others. What this means is that
rather than stating that residence hall
design is directly linked to student
success, the relationship is instead
linear, with one leading to the next.
Based on this model, understanding
the impact of building design on
student experience is more important
than exploring the relationship
between building design and student
success.
