Mankato, says, "one person's sense of
ownership can be another person's hate
speech or vandalism."
Broad discussions have taken place
about diversity and equity, as well as
speculation on the byproducts of strong
identity formation within the residence
hall environment. These discussions are
sure to continue as now, more than ever,
campuses attract a broad range of diverse
students, allowing for residence halls to
become a kaleidoscope of culturally and
socially infused communities. While
diversity is increasing, equity does not
necessarily follow the same trajectory.
Equity takes effort. It takes a commitment
by higher education institutions and
the student body to seek awareness,
empathy, and understanding. Students
with different physical, cognitive, and
emotional abilities, restrictive dietary
requirements, non-heterosexual
orientation, and those of varying
religious beliefs must all coexist, feeling
equally welcome and supported by their
respective communities.

In regards to student ownership
and territoriality - and understanding
that community is defined by who is
included as well as by who is excluded
- the question remains, how should a
residence hall balance exclusion with
inclusion? Campuses have looked at a
variety of solutions regarding student
identity and territoriality, ranging from
programmatic initiatives to the physical
environment. Size (number of students in
the community) and scale (spaces within
the community that make up the physical
construct) of community are important,
as is the role of the resident assistant
in supporting community identity
development. The importance of shared
experiences in bringing community
members closer together and leaving their
mark on the community in a positive,
inclusive, and equitable way is also
recognized.
Whether it is by creating a broad sense
of inclusion or by articulating distinct
communities and identity, residence hall
design shapes how students experience
connections with their peers. Longwood
