University, in Farmville, Virginia,
took a different approach to creating a
sense of community and territoriality
at Stubbs Hall. When the 1966
building was renovated in 2014, the
university used the opportunity to
strengthen the sense of ownership of
public and private space within the
building.
The pairing of environmental
graphics with bedroom and public
spaces creates opportunities for
students to express both their
individuality and their membership
in a larger group. Colorful message
boards give students a place to
showcase their "front door" to the
community. Meanwhile, oversized
chapter room signs express the
identity of the ten sorority chapters
housed in the residence hall. Located
adjacent to the chapter room entry,
the etched glass on the signage panels
features the crests of each sorority,
and the panels provide pin-up space
for the group to display messages
and artwork. Much more than simple
decoration, the environmental
graphics can carry important
meanings. Longwood student
Shannon Lindemann comments, "Our
crest looks amazing! I am in awe of
how something so small could make
me feel like I am part of something so
much larger than myself."

Public space, specific for student
use, influences where students spend
their time and what they are able to
do in their residence halls. However,
budgetary concerns about usage of this
space can become a pressure point if
it is perceived as competing with the
revenue-generating square footage
of student rooms. Community space
runs the risk of being considered
an extravagance when construction

costs rise, placing strain on the overall
project budget. Alternatively, the
concern to compete with off-campus
housing can generate an enthusiasm
for public spaces that focuses more
on entertainment value and luxury
rather than education and learning
experiences. In the end, from a student
development perspective, what housing
professionals must grapple with is
determining the appropriate amount
and mix of public versus private
space needed to support the variety of
experiences and learning outcomes for
today's residential populations.
