college experience here at JMU. When
I see seniors graduating today who
lived here in their first year, it's really
exciting what [Wayland] did for them."
Such sentiments are mirrored
by the students, who explain how
the practice and performance
rooms at Wayland Hall give them
opportunities to explore music and
performance in ways that weave the
arts into their daily lives in powerful
ways. Marion Gray, who lived in
Wayland Hall as a first-year student,
reflects upon his positive experience.
"Living in Wayland provided me
with opportunities that I probably
wouldn't have found anywhere else.
My interest in music flourished
because of Wayland. I go back again
to me learning piano . . . I came in
not knowing anything . . . I've now
written a piece and can read music
because I'm taking music classes .
. . and I've been a lead on the main
stage. I truly believe in very direct
ways that's all because of me being
in that practice room in Wayland my
freshman year every night or every
other night." Another resident, Ricky
Drummand, agrees. "Being able to go
down a couple of floors and go to a
practice room or a recital hall gave us
that freedom to play and feel free to
explore. I was able to talk with other
people and bounce ideas off them and
explore new ideas that I had never
even thought of."
Design features of Wayland
Hall extend beyond the performing
arts. The new art gallery and studio
space give students an opportunity
to develop and share their work in
the visual arts. One of the areas most
enjoyed by Dean is the art gallery
in the main lobby on the first floor.
This space provides an environment
where students can gather, talk, and
work together, while surrounded by
their own and their peers' artwork.
In thinking about the design of the
building, Dean explains that "the
synergy that's created in the physical
structure . . . the way [students]
