Learning how to build relationships with
student staff, while still maintaining appropriate
boundaries, can present challenges; at the very
least, age and experience can create gaps.
Cameron, formerly a hall director at
the University of Northern Colorado
in Greeley, says, "I have had several
good supervisors who placed a high
emphasis on relationships; so this
is now something I've tried to role
model to my student staff. It can seem
artificial at first to some people, but it
is crucial to connect with people before
we can get down to business." Julia
Swanson, a molecular biology major
and resident assistant at Pomona
College in Claremont, California, says
that her supervisor has helped her
through a difficult first semester and
supported her in unexpected ways.
"My residence life coordinator has told
me that he will be supportive of me if
I make the decision not to be an RA,
which is a really selfless thing for a
supervisor to say," she says. "His trust
and friendship makes me feel more
capable to do all aspects of my job
because he is there for me."
While a strong relationship is
an important facet of any supervisorsupervisee relationship, it is even
more significant for residence life
professional staff and student staff:
They live and work together, they
handle situations ranging from
mundane to stressful to something
that is an emergency situation, and a
primary goal of their jobs is building
community. For these reasons, strong
supervisory partnerships built on trust
and understanding are crucial to the
foundation of a successful residence
hall staff team.
Some of the ways residence life
staff create these partnerships this
are old hat: They hold regular one-

on-one and staff meetings, host staff
bonding activities, and participate in
intensive training periods before each
school term. Hall directors typically

take a personal interest and encourage
student staff in their academic, career,
and personal goals, and they support
development of the whole student
