AROUND STUDENT AFFAIRS Message on Alcohol Abuse Undelivered As stated in a research letter published online in JAMA Pediatrics, researchers reveal that messages about the dangers and damages from binge drinking among college and university students are not being routinely delivered by physicians. According to the study, college students were more likely to see a doctor than were their non-college peers, but they received less advice about reducing their drinking and about the health risks linked to substance abuse. The researchers cited obstacles such as lack of training and lack of time for doctors to counsel young adults about the dangers of heavy alcohol use and the related health risks. Additionally, they noted that young adults may worry about the confidentiality of their responses to questions about their drinking habits and use of other substances.
