JILL POWELL
What's the biggest issue for the students on your campus right
now?
Mental health. There is an old saying that has resonated with me
here in Moscow, Idaho: "Everyone you meet is fighting a battle
you know nothing about. Be kind. Always." Many people in the
Northwest are affected by Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) as
winter approaches and the days get shorter and shorter. I have
noticed, more here at Idaho than anywhere else, how vocal
and aware the students are about their mental health or their
personal well-being. It creates an opportunity for residence life
staff and other students to understand mental health concerns
and provide resources to students who are open to receiving help.

What makes your campus unique?
Philanthropy. Every fall, on the Saturday before school begins,
departments and community members host an event for firstyear students called SYNC - Serving Your New Community. The
housing and residence life department has served this theme by
providing two philanthropy events each year: Paint the Palouse
and the Tower Trick or Treat. Paint the Palouse celebrated its 26th
anniversary this September and is an opportunity for student
volunteers to help paint the houses of those in need in the
community. The Tower Trick or Treat event, hosted in Theophilus
Tower, which is our largest residence hall, will invite hundreds of
children from the surrounding community to celebrate Halloween.
It is celebrating its 37th anniversary this year.

JILL POWELL is the assistant
director of student engagement
at the University of Idaho in
Moscow.
What motivates you the most in
your job?
Success stories. Oftentimes in this
profession I feel like I do not know the
impact I am making until much later.
It's the email a few days after, months
or even sometimes years later, from a
student simply saying "thank you." I will
often save these emails or letters and
look at them when needed. They are
simple reminders of the fact that I indeed
change students' lives, but often we
(professionals) do not realize the impact
we are making unless we are told. I have
to often remind myself that I do great
work.

What are your favorite campus traditions?
Tower lights show. Each year during Homecoming, a campus
group hosted by the computer science department, the
Association for Computing Machinery, comes into Theophilus
Tower and provides a lights show for all the students. It's really
awesome, and the students of the building really enjoy it. The
lights are placed in the windows of each room that overlooks the
large lawn in front of the building. Folks are able to gather on the
lawn and watch the synchronized event each fall.

What is the most challenging part of your work?
Parents. My job oversees the conduct, training, and leadership
development for residence life, which means I get to talk with
parents about an array of topics, ranging from "How does my
student become an RA?" to "I told them to put sardines in the
girl's room because they did not get along." I have started to see
an increase in parent/sibling involvement in conduct meetings.
Sometimes, parents will even bring their bible and thesaurus,
and we have to have a conversation about religious beliefs during
conduct meetings. Other times, we have students who do not
have a guardian, and that conversation is very different. I enjoy
the parent interactions of those who understand FERPA versus
those who think it is just the paper they signed at the registrar's
office.
