VISION

A Seat at the Table
One of the primary goals of most any professional association is to educate its
members on the good work that its members do and provide resources to help them
be more successful. In addition, there are times when an association must extend its
reach and make sure that others outside of the membership also are aware of the skills
and knowledge that the association members possess and, in turn, ensure that they
have a seat at the table when important decisions are being made.
This ideal is represented within the new ACUHO-I strategic
plan goal of increasing the emphasis and promotion of ACUHO-I's
influential leadership and advocacy. As I've commented before, this
area is the greatest progression from what ACUHO-I has tackled
in the past, and it comes directly from the feedback that we heard
from members. To that end, I want to highlight recent efforts where
ACUHO-I has worked to make sure that the voice of the campus
housing professionals is heard.

TO
MAXIMIZE OUR
EFFECTIVENESS,
WE NEED THE
COLLECTIVE
EAR OF THE
ASSOCIATION
KEPT TO THE
GROUND AND
PREPARED
TO IDENTIFY
EMERGING
ISSUES.

One such effort occurred earlier this year when ACUHO-I helped
draft and then signed onto a letter provided to the U.S. Department
of Labor. This letter was in response to proposed changes to the
regulations governing exemptions to the Fair Labor Standards
Act's overtime pay requirements for executive, administrative, and
professional employees. This topic, along with others such as the
impact of the Affordable Care Act on student employees as well as the
Safe Campus Act and concealed-carry gun permits, are ones that can
make a dramatic difference on our campuses. That is why they will
continue to be focal points for the ACUHO-I Public Policy Advisory
Committee led by Chris MacDonald (Georgia Southern University).

In addition, ACUHO-I has also formed a task force to explore
strategies for increased advocacy efforts. Under the leadership of
Chris MacDonald, Pam Schreiber (University of Washington), and
Doug Hallenbeck (Clemson University), this group will examine the
procedures and resources needed for an association to successfully
engage in advocacy on the state, national, and international level while
providing member education about the issues, their impact, and
potential response strategies.
These efforts and others will continue to move us closer to our goal of having
ACUHO-I's influence strengthen the campus housing profession. To maximize our
effectiveness, we need the collective ear of the association kept to the ground and
prepared to identify emerging issues. Share what you learn, as well as your opinions,
in the ACUHO-I online community. Phone or email executive board members. Our
voice will be the loudest when we speak together and with our collective knowledge
behind us.

TALKING STICK

TALKING STICK
Symbol of International
Friendship
Talking Stick magazine
takes its name from the
symbol of international
friendship presented
to ACUHO-I in 1973 by
the Ohiat Band of the
British Columbia Indian
Nation. The talking stick,
or speaker's staff, is
hand carved, and the
inscription explains, "It is
a sign of authority carried
when proclamations
are to be made or a
meeting of chiefs is in
session. It is a token
of common heritage
both to Canadians and
Americans."
