Mary Louise Petersen was an
outstanding student at the
University of Iowa and is still
recognized among the students
and faculty as a major contributor
not only to the school but also
to the state's higher education
system. For this reason, the
University of Iowa has decided
to dedicate their new residence
hall, Petersen Hall, to her. It is the
university's first new residence
hall in more than 40 years, and it
brings the latest in campus living
design. This 10-story building
has 501 beds, one restaurant, six
study rooms, and a gender-free
bathroom. Additionally, Petersen
has 1,032 green outlets that can
sense when rooms are vacant and
turn off lights when they are not in
use. Iowa estimates their energy
savings at $326,546.

TALKING STICK
On the first level, there is a
multipurpose room, a community
kitchen, hall staff offices, a
seminar room, and the Theodore
M. Rehder Residential Learning
Commons. Levels two through
seven are pod-style living
floors, and the lower level offers
space for Black's Gold Grill, the
building's restaurant. Levels eight
through ten are home to six livinglearning communities: Kitchen
Table, STEM Scholars, Hawkeye
Pride, Global Mosaic, Biz Hawks,
and Popular Literature. And,
finally, this hall houses the artwork
"Scholastic Truth" by Adam and
Dawn Eikamp. The inspiration
for the piece came from a
quotation by Martin Luther King:
"Intelligence plus character - that
is the goal of true education."
