Active shooter scenarios
have become the face of
campus violence. In 2015,
Umpqua Community
College in Roseburg,
Oregon; Northern Arizona
University in Flagstaff;
Texas Southern University
in Houston; and WinstonSalem State University
in North Carolina were
added to a growing list of
affected campuses. How
can you prepare for these
tragedies? One way is to
provide annual, mandatory
active shooter training for
all persons working in
residence life and housing.
An online option is "Run,
Hide, Fight," a video
developed by the Houston
Police Department that is
available on YouTube®.
Another step is to
incorporate the knowledge
gained from training into
your crisis response plan,
including what to do,
places of refuge in areas
you frequent, and how
you will respond to an
active shooter situation
from your personal work
space. Finally, active
shooter trainings are
enhanced by engaging
campus early warning
systems. Be sure that staff
from residence life and
housing are members of
the campus's behavioral
threat and assessment
teams.

TALKING STICK

All You Need Is Love
In 2010, at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, in the wake of Tyler
Clementi's suicide at Rutgers University in New Jersey, student staff
came to their supervisor with a mission: to create a campus climate of
acceptance. After taking time to brainstorm and discuss options, they
created the Only Love Project. For the past five years, this project has
traveled to multiple campuses for free and has spread a mission of
love by allowing students, staff, faculty, and community members to
participate in a photo shoot to show their support for LGBT students
on campus. The photos are then utilized through social media and a
campus poster series that allows all students passing through their
campus to see visual support for an invisible community. The program
has now reached well over 2,500 students. Check out facebook.com/
