Music Pays
for Housing
Low Number of
Campus Rape Cases
Questioned
After an analysis of the 2014 Clery
Act data, the American Association of
University Women reported in November
2015 that the figures indicated that 9
out of 10 colleges reported that zero
rapes had occurred on their campuses
in 2014. They looked for reasons why
the data was shaped this way and cited
several issues. Many students do not
report instances of rape because they
are ashamed and traumatized and don't
feel comfortable coming forward. Also,
campus officials and counseling centers
are not coordinated enough around
their efforts to report incidents. Their
analysis recommends that campuses do
their due diligence with better processes
for supporting victims and reporting
incidents and that campuses should
administer climate surveys to better
understand the problems associated
with sexual violence and underreporting

Many students have
found consecutively
paying for tuition and
on-campus residential
housing challenging,
especially in the initial
years of college, when
living on campus is a
requirement. The Dutch
government has found
an answer to such a
challenge. In 2012,
they cut funding for
the elderly over 80 who
were not in dire need
of medical attention. At
the same time, they had
trouble finding housing
for their students, as
they were short 9,000
beds and could only offer
cramped quarters. In
response to both issues,
they developed programs
such as Humanitas: an
extensive care facility
where the elderly live
with students. It is a
win-win situation: The
elderly do not have to
pay increasing prices,
and students do not have
to pay for housing but
pay, instead, by working
with the elderly. In the
U.S. this arrangement
is offered at Judson
Manor in Cleveland,
Ohio, a converted hotel
that offers the same
living arrangements for
graduate students from
the Cleveland Institute
of Music. The students
often perform concerts
for the elderly or include
the elderly in their
performances.
