Talking Stick: How does your roommate
matching process affect your room change
process? Are you inclined to make these
requests into learning opportunities for
the students, or are they granted with few
questions asked?

Johnson: We allow for any room change request as long as it is submitted
after the third week of classes and can be accommodated by the current
availability. That said, the vast majority of our switch requests tend to come
from students who are living in our single rooms, rather than any of the
buildings which have roommates. Because so many of our roommate
assignments are self-selected, there is usually not a particularly high instance
of requests to change due to roommate disputes. Usually we have maybe
2-3 per semester in a pool of about 400 students.
Magura: I've alluded to this in answers above, but basically I have not seen
any change in room changes. We make the process to change rooms as easy
as possible because we want students to be living in an environment that is
conducive to their academic endeavors.
Apanel: To request a room change, a student needs to have the RA sign our
form, and then the RA's supervisor needs to sign the form. This indicates to
us that all mediation attempts have been attempted.
Humphries: For this year we actually did not receive many roommate
requests (for first years)! We do all we can to ensure that our roommate
and assignment policies are very clear by posting it all over our website
and providing details in the application process. The occasional roommate
request we received was simply explained in a very similar way to how I
described above, and we did not have issues.
King: Often our residence life staff use the data from our application form
when talking students through potential roommate requests. Although we
may have matched a student up with a preferred roommate, we try to explore
what has changed since the time of the student's application. It does become
a learning opportunity for students, but if space is available in different
communities or rooms we will often facilitate the room change to keep the
student happy.
Crim: With 12,700 students on campus, the numbers that apply for a room
change are small in comparison. It depends on the learning community and
the time of year. We work with our First Year Programs office to determine a
student eligibility to move into a community.
