a professor of organizational development at
Stanford University in California, reports that
75 percent of the workforce feel that their boss
is the most stressful part of the job. Translating
this to the world of housing and residence
life, this means that having a bad boss is more
stressful than waking up for late-night duty
calls, managing room assignments, mediating
student staff conflicts, responding to students
in crisis, negotiating roommate conflicts, and
navigating an unexpected facility emergency. If
dealing with all of those things is considered to
be better than dealing with a supervisor, it may
be time to take a critical look at current work
environments and management techniques.
Having a bad experience with a supervisor
can lead to lack of job satisfaction, low morale,
disengagement, and a host of other mental,
physical, and social woes. When there are so
many other critical moments and stresses
in the day, having an interaction with a bad
supervisor should not be one of them.
Before changing or adjusting behaviors as
supervisors, one must understand how most
supervisors in the field are prepared. In the
campus housing profession, most begin their
careers supervising students. In this capacity, the
role of supervisor may compete with the many
hats also worn as advisors, mentors, educators,
conduct officers, mediators, and others. In
preparation for these roles, institutional culture
as well as departmental vision and goals are
discussed. Training focuses on how to hold
staff accountable, manage conflict, document
negative behaviors, and administer the conduct
process. Rarely, however, are professional
staff trained on how to create healthy work
environments for those they supervise. Nor
do they learn about how expectations, as
a supervisor, change once the shift occurs
from supervising student paraprofessionals
to overseeing full-time professional staff. As
a result, many learn how to supervise from
experience, whether good or bad.
Danielle Page, the coordinator for cocurricular learning at the University of Dayton
in Ohio, notes that "negative experiences with
supervisors are personally and professionally
impactful moments that tend to serve as
reminders that help us make choices and
approach those we supervise in a way that can be
avoidant of repeating the same." For many in the
field, this learn-as-you-go approach to supervisory
training leads to much trial and error.
