Aho, assistant director of residential
education. The hall was built from the
ground up with entrepreneurship and
innovation in mind. As the website
explains, it "will merge 400 unique
residences with a 20,000-square-foot
'garage' for students to attend events,
build prototypes, compete, launch
their futures - or just hang out." In
addition to the garage, each of the four
floors includes themed makerspaces
equipped with materials aimed at
advancing students' work in the areas
of sustainability and global impact,
product design, adventure, and games
and digital media.
While those who have launched
residence hall-based makerspaces
were excited by their benefits and
potential, they stress that, like any
project, there are also some concerns.

and its needs before launching such

an initiative. Do not create a space
and then try to create demand for it.
Instead, think like an entrepreneur
and work to provide solutions to an
existing problem or answer an existing
question. What do the students want
a space for? Is it a space for creating
music? Computer application design?
Sewing and textiles? Find out what
tools and opportunities students
need for their coursework and then
see if the hall's makerspace can meet
those needs. If there is not a class
requirement to utilize the space, it
will probably be underutilized. As
Arnold-Christian notes, "it's further
and further from their availability
to go use the space. Everything they

have to do is taking priority. I'll talk
to students who say they just haven't
had time to go use the space but really
want to."
To best determine how to outfit
the spaces, learn to communicate
using the language and terminology
that best describes creative innovation
spaces. Because the language is not
always cohesive or intuitive across
borders, it is important to make
sure the community understands
the language. As Aaron George,
