FOUNDATIONAL

director who has had a Facebook
account since they were 13. Staff should
be able to develop expectations of one
another and how they will represent
themselves as a team of professionals
on social media."
The benefits of using social media
as a professional development tool
outweigh the bad for most users. The
ability to build a network of colleagues
year round, rather than focusing on
conferences, gives professionals a
stronger foundation to rely on for
support and connectedness. It can
also bolster the conference experience
by allowing social media users to
connect face to face. Bringing online
relationships into a physical space
heightens the connection and allows
for more substantial learning because
barriers have already been removed.
"Creating a network in person takes
knowing someone, such as a mentor
or supervisor, to help you get started.

It also takes time," says Wyett. "If
someone is looking to create a network
online, what greater place to turn than
social media spaces? From finding
each other at a conference you are both
attending, sharing costs of hotel rooms,
or even just feeling like you know a
familiar face in a sea of strangers, these
social media connections allow for
professionals to feel more immediately
connected. Not every professional
works at a school with resources or
dedicated professional mentors. I'm
glad that social media can at least fill in
some of that. It is not perfect, nor is it
the solution, but it's a viable option for
those who want or need it."
Social media spaces are a
microcosm of the good and bad of
any group. Being good stewards
of the space and creating positive
connections will exemplify appropriate
decorum for other users and allow
the spaces to continue being used for

positive professional development and
networking. Ultimately, for Ahlquist,
social media users should approach
one another as they would in a face-toface situation. "Take care of each other.
We're all trying to figure these tools out
through trial and error. We're going to
see error. We need to see how we can
help each other through those errors
so we can become better professionals
together." 
