learning and engagement, but they need
to be able to back this up with solid data.
As Julie Franklin, director of residence
life at Brigham Young University in
Provo, Utah, explained, "Our academic
colleagues have been developing learning
outcomes for courses and educational
experiences and assessments to measure
success on reaching those outcomes.
Our challenge is to find an equivalent
way of measuring the impact of the
students' residential experiences." Some
participants, 24 percent, were specifically
concerned with how the quality of
facilities impacts students' academic
and social success. Questions included
whether overcrowding (i.e., placing
students in triples), room size, layout
(suites or traditional-style), or types of
amenities affect student success. For
example, Matt Jordan, assistant director
of residence life at St. Mary's College of
Maryland, stressed that "It is critical for
us to understand what role our facilities

play in helping our students develop and
learn and how we can make them as
flexible and affordable as possible."
Staffing was another major
topic, selected by 28 percent of those
questioned. Specific topics ranged
from recruitment and training and
the diversity of staff to professional
development and an increasing
workload. Many participants shared their
concerns about understaffing, the lack of
quality employees, staff turnover, and the
lack of leadership. David Bagley, senior
director of residence life at Rochester
Institute of Technology in New York,
emphasized the value of the face-to-face
interactions, caring communication, and
personal connections made possible by
housing staff. "Staffing of our profession
is important because our staff are the
life-blood of the residential experience
for our students. Although technology
makes it easier to communicate with
students, I would argue that it is more

difficult to connect on the human level
that our staff provides, and we feel
strongly that the true-care approach is
essential to the success of our students."
This year-long interview project
has revealed the voices that need to be
heard so that our association can meet
the objective set forth by ACUHO-I
President Allan Blattner: "To maximize
our effectiveness, we need the collective
ear of the association kept to the ground
and prepared to identify emerging
issues" (Talking Stick, November/
December 2015). The sounds and
perspectives of 750 voices is a good place
to start. 
