Common partners in these areas
include the dean of student's staff,
police, and safety liaisons. Occasional
partners in LLCs and academic success
may include staff from academic
advising offices or from undergraduate
studies offices.
In the day-to-day world of senior
housing officers, the partnerships
are broader, with the goal of ensuring
that their departments are well placed
in the full context of the institution.
Many partners include offices that
the individual has no prior experience
with. And where there has been a
prior connection to someone in a
particular office, more often than not
that primary partner and connection
changes. At this level, the fundamental
goal is to serve the institution for the
benefit of all.
For the present study, we
originally asked 15 seasoned Senior
Housing Officers (SHOs) from
the Southeastern Association of
Housing Officers (SEAHO) to share
their experience with forming and
maintaining key partnerships on their
campuses. We then decided to expand
our data to include participants of the
2016 Chief Housing Officers Institute
and participants in a CHO roundtable
program held during the 2016
SEAHO annual conference. Although
the additional respondents represented
institutions from other regions of the
country, the results discussed in this
article reflect the thoughts of 30 SHOs
who are working primarily in the
SEAHO region. There were 9 private
and 21 public institutions represented.
The average housing capacity for the
public institutions was 5,150 residents.
The average capacity of the private
institutions was 1,542; however, half
of the private institutions reported
less than 1,000 residents. The average
length of service of those responding
was 10 years.
Four of the respondents were Chief
Residence Life Officers (CRLOs), and
26 were CHOs who have residence life
operations under their leadership. Five
reported dining as an additional area
of responsibility. Of the 26 institutions
with combined housing and residence
life operations, 23 reported to be full
auxiliary operations and 7 reported
to function at least partially as
"customers of the institution's physical
plant." For the purpose of this article,
we will use the term CHO when
referring to the respondents.
