Talking Stick: You explored different
reactions to what you called "wellintentioned institutional actions"
to welcome students that fell
into a niche such as international
students or students of color. On
one hand, you had students that
felt such actions diminished their
individuality while others welcomed
the opportunity to meet other like
students. Were you able to come to
any conclusions about the value of
such efforts, or is it simply a matter of
the student's individual preference?
Just based on the number of
international students and students
of color who, as first-year students,

expressed an appreciation for the
efforts made by their colleges to help
them meet one another, we would
argue that social events and mixers
targeting particular groups of students
are indeed valuable. We did hear from
just a few students - we mention
two in the book - who felt that their
colleges were making assumptions
about who they were by sending them
an invitation to, say, an event sponsored
by the Asian Student Union simply
because they happened to be Asian
American.
One particularly eloquent student
spoke about the college's assumptions
about who she was and with what
groups she identified as essentially
placing her and other students into
tidy, reductionist boxes; there's a box

for Asian students, a box for Latina
students, a box for first-generation
students, etc. Although we, and
the vast majority of international
students and students of color in our
study, did not think their colleges'
efforts to bring them together were
misguided, this student's remarks did
serve as an important reminder that
programs targeting specific groups of
students can have unintended negative
consequences.
Well-intentioned residential life
administrators and staff confront a
helping conundrum: They want to
help students to make connections to
other students who likely share similar
backgrounds, interests, and concerns,
but in doing so they are labeling
students as members of groups,
