Moving the Middle
Developing middle managers for the
next step
Every organization has a group of
professionals who serve as the movers,
the shakers, the behind-the-scenes
doers and the planners. Their job
titles range from coordinator, assistant
director, associate director, and director
to budget manager, facilities manager,
and assistant vice president. They
manage people, resources, budgets,
facilities operations, technology,
programs, services, and the strategic
objectives of senior leadership. These
individuals are known as mid-level
managers, and they play a key role
in our departments and within our
divisions of student affairs. Their
contributions are invaluable because
their work supports our top leaders and
helps to deliver on key results; they also
navigate around frequent roadblocks,
limited resources, and shifts in the
political landscape.
As some senior leaders have
realized recently, the development of
mid-level managers must be a priority
or higher education institutions
will face a limited pool of qualified
professionals to carry our work forward.
While some mid-level managers will
choose to remain in their position for
the duration of their careers, others
may look to move up. Both of these
groups will need a plan of action and
support from senior managers. Delmy
Lendof, director of residential staff
and programs at New York University,
has spent a number of years coaching
these professionals in preparation for
their move up the career ladder. One
of her first steps is to ask them about
career goals. "As a supervisor, I like to
begin the conversation with the same
three questions I have asked mid-level
managers over the years. How can I
get to know you as a person? What are
your short-term and long-term career
interests? Lastly, where do you want to
