VISION

Wings of Change
As housing officers, our day jobs can keep us very busy. As we revise budgets,
envision renovation and construction projects, mediate relationships, update
programming, and deal with the multitude of other things that demand our
attention, it is easy to lose sight of the many ways the world around us can impact our
work.
That reality was made apparent last January as ACUHO-I hosted its inaugural
State of the Profession event in Atlanta, Georgia. For three days, 56 senior housing
officers came together to gain greater context and clarity on a host
of issues and to be challenged to consider them from different
perspectives. As speakers presented on emerging issues in higher
education, a changing political landscape, freedom of expression,
legal policies, assessment analytics, and other topics, we were
reminded that the capacity to consider and make meaning of
divergent ideas is one of the most essential skills that we employ as
housing leaders.

WHAT IS
CERTAIN IS THAT
BY STAYING
CONNECTED
TO ISSUES
THAT AFFECT
YOU, ACUHO-I
IS POISED
TO LEND ITS
SUPPORT IN THE
MONTHS AND
YEARS AHEAD.

It also was readily apparent that we - on our campuses and in our
association - will need to possess the willingness to search out new
information and then be nimble and flexible enough to incorporate it
into our thinking and action.
The State of the Profession event may have spanned only three
days, but its influence will be felt for far longer. We will issue a
summary of the information presented to the entire membership,
and the topics raised will be manifested in the curricula of future
events and the pages of future publications. Finally, several specific
suggestions are likely to be incorporated into the association's
strategic plan moving forward.

TALKING STICK
Symbol of International
Friendship
Talking Stick magazine
takes its name from the
symbol of international
friendship presented
to ACUHO-I in 1973 by
the Ohiat Band of the
British Columbia Indian
Nation. The talking stick,
or speaker's staff, is
hand carved, and the
inscription explains, "It is
a sign of authority carried
when proclamations
are to be made or a
meeting of chiefs is in
session. It is a token
of common heritage
both to Canadians and
Americans."

ON THE
COVER

There is no doubt that we are confronted with an uncertain world.
What is certain is that by staying connected to issues that affect you,
ACUHO-I is poised to lend its support in the months and years
ahead. Together, we will work hard to advance our profession for the
benefit of our students. I look forward to this work.
