" I GET MORE FROM CLASSES
KNOWING THAT I CAN GO
HOME TO A SAFE PLACE."
- Student in the 2-in-20 Program

During the 2001-02 academic year,
as part of my graduate assistantship
with residence life at the University
of Massachusetts Amherst, I had the
opportunity to work with the 2-in-20
Program, one of the first LGBTQ and
ally residential living communities. Its
name was a play on the belief that 1 in
10 people are LGBTQ. While 1-in-10
sounded lonely, 2-in-20 illustrated that
the LGBTQ student was not alone.
The program opened in 1992 with five
students. A year later there were 30
students living on the fourth floor of
Mary Lyon Hall.
During that year, I did my fair
share of mediating roommate conflicts, but more so, I was able to see
the friendship, support, and acceptance that living on this floor provided
students. Many of the residents were
involved in educational programming
about LGBTQ issues, often traveling
to other residence halls to facilitate
the Guess Who's Straight? Program,
which strived to break down the
stereotypes of LGBTQ people. The
benefits of the 2-in-20 Program, and
others of its kind, can best be illustrated by one student's perception of the
experience, as presented in an article
by Sandra Herbst and Gary Malaney:
"I get more from classes knowing that
I can go home to a safe place."
Currently, there are no statistics
regarding how many colleges and
universities provide an LGBTQ residential community option. However,
institutions across the country have

implemented themed floors/houses
such as the Unity House (est. 2008) at
the University of California Berkeley;
Open House (est. 1992) at Wesleyan
University in Middletown, Connecticut;
and, more recently, the Rainbow Floor
in 2015 at Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington. Like the 2-in-20
Program, these residential communities offer students opportunities to
connect with other LGBTQ students,
live in safer communities, and engage
in educational programming. Increasingly, and especially in the last decade, residential life programs include
gender-inclusive housing options.
The Trans Clearinghouse lists 212
colleges and universities that have
formal policies regarding genderinclusive housing. The language and
implementation of these policies vary
greatly between institutions. The
policies often come with restrictions
regarding who can take advantage of
these options and differences about
where the housing is located and
what constitutes gender-inclusive
housing. For instance, only a limited
number of institutions allow first-year
students to live in gender-inclusive
housing or require a student to
identify as LGBTQ. Others provide
accommodations only in suite-style
apartments, single rooms with gender-inclusive bathrooms, or as part of
a themed residential learning community. Policies that allow students
to live with anybody anywhere on
campus are few and far between.
