and institutions." It is time that professionals at all levels recognize what
kind of culture we have created and
have allowed to evolve, knowing that
our students and staff lose parts of us,
and our service, when we're consumed
with what we need to do to reach the
next position.

the mindset of someone perpetually
looking for another job, however, these
roots are unstable. They fail to take

for professional development are offered outside the immediate job experience - on another campus, in sessions
with other departments, in meetings
with others outside our work teams -
professional development should still
have direct ties to the job, the team,
and the department. The time spent in
these experiences should enhance our
ability to be grounded in the immediate
context of our daily work.

young professionals valuable lessons
about how to extract the meaningful
lessons they have learned from their
daily experience on the job. Young
professionals should be able to see

from there. What does it mean to work
on becoming a great supervisor? What
does it mean to constantly improve
and grow as an administrator? These
competencies are not built through the
constant addition of committee work,
projects, or tasks. They're mastered
through focused and disciplined selfreflection and practice. Luckily, there
is no shortage of tools to accomplish
this. ACUHO-I, Student Affairs
Administrators in Higher Education (NASPA), and College Student
Educators International (ACPA) offer
competency models that allow for
self-reflection, tracking of growth, and
meaningful pathways for learning. To
be effective, these tools should be used

and developing interests beyond the
position creates a sharper focus while
at work, in meetings, or serving students, and it provides needed support

excellent in your current position and
in serving students. Conferences, webinars, books, and blog posts emphasize
the value of professional development,
but not simply as a way to climb the
departmental or institutional ladder.
Professional development is, first and
foremost, a way to improve our current

extract meaningful lessons from both
good and bad experiences. Supervision is a teaching experience, and it
reflects an active role, not a passive
one. Effective supervision doesn't
come from your three years' experience of supervising a graduate student;
it comes from taking the time to hone
your skills as a supervisor. As John
Biernbaum, associate vice provost for
student services at Western Illinois
University in Macomb, explains, "To
truly develop your craft you need to repeatedly work at and focus on the basic
skills that make up the foundation and
framework of your development. Success isn't a destination or a checklist. It
is not 'what is next.' It is a compilation
of experiences full of trials and error. It
