focused sub-communities of social and
academic purpose, while the spaces'
multipurpose furnishings and spatial
components activate mixed interactions between students, their peers,
and their instructors in a collaborative
environment.
Organization: The Creation of True
Living and Learning Communities
Aimed at promoting collaboration and
casual academic immersion, Bell Hall
strategically leverages the super-suite
residential configuration to create
concentric living and learning communities (LLCs). Organizing students'
living assignments by area of study,
such as math, science, or language,
rather than by graduating year and
gender, each living corridor of Bell
Hall places students in educational
focus groups composed of 27 residents who represent a combination
of lower- and upper-division students.
For example, one wing of the building
may be dedicated to students pursuing degrees in science, whereas the
other wing may house math majors.
It is within these mixed-age, mixedgender learning communities that
comprehensive academic immersion
and mentorship are designed to thrive.
Encouraging learning and collaborative
engagement outside the classroom,
each corridor hosts a modern conference room equipped with desks, chairs,
whiteboards, and an overhead projector
where students may work independently, with classmates, or with mentors in the same academic program to
study, problem-solve, and gain guided
instruction. The conference room
further welcomes widespread use with
glass feature walls that may be written
on with dry-erase markers, providing
additional space for notetaking, as well
as an unobstructed flow of natural light.
Located on the first floor, a 1,030square-foot classroom - known as an
