Mental Health in Residence Life
Giving support to students and getting support as a staff person
Residence life professionals
accomplish the complex and
multifaceted work of supporting
students in their out-of-class learning
and development. In addition to
helping students develop a sense of
belonging, explore their beliefs, and
understand their roles as citizens
in larger communities, staff deal
with mental health issues among
students, staff, and in their own
lived experiences. This conversation
includes a number of staff who have
dealt with such complex issues in
their own work.

For the purposes of this dialogue,
each participant was asked to come
up with a case study related to mental
health in residential communities
and to respond to the cases their
colleagues developed. Participating
in this conversation are Danielle
Barefoot, residence hall coordinator at
the University of Delaware in Newark;
Amy Fitzjarrald, program coordinator
for retention and student success at
the University of Houston in Texas;
Wayne Glass, residence hall director
at Macalester College in Saint Paul,
Minnesota; and Chelsea Tirrell, hall
director at Texas Christian University
in Fort Worth.
Michelle Boettcher: Before we look at
some of the case studies, why do you
think the topic of mental health in a
housing context is important?
Amy Fitzjarrald: This topic is vital
to the success of student affairs
professionals, especially those in
