BACKWARD DESIGN
Using outcome-based strategies to center
work on student learning

Don metaphorical academic regalia and
sink into the mindset of a professor or
an instructor. What course would you
teach, what would be your method of
instruction, and what would you want
your students to learn?

In recent years, residence life
professionals have begun to adopt this
mindset in an effort to improve student
learning in the residence halls. The life
of a live-in professional can be consumed with the business of a residence
hall - administrative tasks such as
damage billing, budget oversight, and
conduct management. However, residence halls are also uniquely situated
as student learning centers; few other
units have the same level of access and
proximity to students, but the key to
unlocking their potential to provide
cocurricular education is employing
outcome-based strategies.
Backward Design is one such strategy. Outlined in the book Understanding
by Design by Grant Wiggins and Jay
McTighe, it was originally designed as
a classroom instruction technique and
was employed for years by both K-12
and higher education instructors. It is
essentially a thought model that asks
educators to reverse the direction of the
traditional curriculum design. Instead
of beginning with the usual considerations - deciding on a textbook, determining the best method for delivering
the instruction, and making lesson
plans - the educator begins at the end:
looking at the desired results.
