Equitable Housing Across
All Floors
Today's res hall plans reflect all-access design inside and out.
"Innovative thinking is needed to exceed code compliance." That was the
guiding premise of a previous story
about equitable housing that appeared
in the Talking Stick's NovemberDecember 2016 Facilities column. It
went on to say, "several institutions are
applying highly nuanced universal design strategies to make student rooms
in residential communities - the
home away from home for students -
truly accessible." Creating equity for
students in residence halls in the most
personal of spaces - their bedrooms -
is a vital place to begin addressing the
many ways people inadvertently create
barriers to fair treatment. Yet the entire

and healthy lifestyles all institutions

As designers and architects
consider equity in the student living
environment, the main entry carries
extra significance. The front door
is the first impression and the first
physical impression of the building in
terms of how diverse needs must be
accommodated. For example, starting
