JUST IN
The University of Wollongong's newest
residence facility, Bangalay, was
designed for Australian and international
postgraduates, along with students over
21 and families. The building comes
as the first portion of the university's
accommodation expansion and has won
the Silver Winner award in the 2017
Sydney Design Awards.

The university entered into a longterm license agreement for the entire
student accommodation portfolio with
Living + Learning Partners in order to
help increase the number of beds offered
to students to 2,687 by 2018. Bangalay
adds 254 beds to the campus, in a mix of
single- and double-bed studios along with
two- and three-bed family units. All of the
units have their own kitchen, bathroom,
living space, and balcony. The complex
also has a shared modern laundry area,
a public kitchen, and numerous meeting
rooms. And outside is a playground
for children, along with landscaped
communal areas including barbeque
amenities.
In order to bring the community PHOTOS COURTESY OF
together, there will be numerous events
hosted on a regular basis. Additionally,
there is a car share and bike share
program available to students, along
with a free shuttle connecting the
residents to the city, train station, and
nearby beach. The name of the hall
comes from the Bangalay tree, otherwise
known as gum trees or mahogany, which
was used by the Dharawal People, the
area's traditional owners, to create their
shelters. The university is honored to
be able to acknowledge the language
and culture of the Aboroginal Dharawal
People through the naming of this
residence.
The University of Wollongong hopes
that this new housing will contribute
to raising the graduation rates of
postgraduates and nontraditional-age
students, as well as helping them deal
with the stresses of being a student with
a family. The next portion of the student
accommodation will be Kooloobong
Village opening in February 2018.
