Clemson Makes Way for New Student
Complex

Award-Winning Website
In the November + December 2017 issue of the
Talking Stick we profiled winners of the 2017
ACUHO-I Marketing Awards ("Head of the
Class"). In that story, we overlooked the University of Colorado Boulder Housing and Dining Services website, which tied with those of University
of Minnesota Housing and Residential Life and
Loyola Marymount University Student Housing
for the first-place prize. We regret the error.
In awarding the CU "Be Boulder" site,
judges spotlighted the completely redeveloped
site for its more concise content, more direct
navigation, new filter features, and improved
photos and design. In addition, the new site
seamlessly integrated with other web applications, ultimately improving the user experience. The project team included Hillary Campbell, Meaghan McEwan, Autumn Roberts,
Susan James, Christina Morris, Kelly Tomlin,
Rachel Milan, Tony Balke, Jesse Petersen, Michael Feller, Phil McKenzie, and Katie Theiler.

Sixty-seven years of history disappeared in seconds on Clemson University's campus in South Carolina on December 3, 2017. The Clemson
House, a hotel known for its hospitality toward celebrities and students
alike, was imploded to make way for a new student complex. Staff,
some of whom had worked in the building for 20 plus years, stood and
watched as it collapsed. Randy Rice, associate director of housing and
dining facilities and past president of ACUHO-I, reminisced with other
bystanders and recalled hiring his first housing assistant in Clemson
House. He also recalled the celebrities, like Burt Reynolds and Red Skelton, who stayed in the rooftop penthouse portion of the hotel.
Although it was difficult to let go of such a campus icon, campus
leaders have role-modeled positivity for moving forward with the plans
for the new complex. In 2016 they began moving students and staff to
new accommodations on campus. Students were encouraged to write a
farewell message on one of the house's walls. Susan Hiott, curator for
the campus library's special collections and archives, captured the history
and spirit of Clemson House in a slideshow that will be preserved in the
university's archive (https://spark.adobe.com/page/CiCewCEONOWiz/).
Finally, Kathy Hobgood, assistant vice president and executive director
of housing and dining, summed it up this way on her Facebook page:
"We will remember
her fondly, keep all
the memories in our
hearts, and use all we
learned within her
walls to build towards
the future. @clemsonhome #acuhoi."

Making Better Resolutions
The key to failure for many New Year's resolutions is that each one is simply too big and vague to be successful. What exactly
does "getting fit and healthy" look like? What are you saving money on - and what are you saving money for? Who knows
exactly what work/life balance looks like? S.M.A.R.T. goals - which are specific, measurable, achievable, results-focused, and
time-bound - are often used to help students develop strategies and a plan to achieve their goals. Professionals need their own
S.M.A.R.T. resolutions in order to truly be successful. For example, first identify what getting healthy looks like to you: doing
50 push-ups every day, eating more vegetables, or scheduling a yearly check-in with your doctor.

redefining the
student experience
From award-winning residence
life programs to exclusive global
student travel opportunities,
we are constantly creating new
ways to reinvent the student
experience.

the clv difference
Our buildings aren't just facilities. They are
places where communities are born. We
understand that student housing is more
than just four walls and a bed, so we focus
on creating exciting residential experiences
that you won't find anywhere else.

Breaking down a resolution into bite-size parts is the key to success according to Leo Babauta from Zen Habits. He identifies four simple steps to forming a habit: Start exceedingly small, be mindful of negative thoughts, savor the habit, and have a
plan for when you falter. In her book Better Than Before, Gretchen Rubin recommends a similar method to support the development of good habits and to change bad habits. Ultimately, Rubin's strategy is best summarized with a secret of adulthood
from her first book, The Happiness Project: "What you do every day matters more than what you do once in a while."
Eventually, you will make a good habit so easy that it's impossible to forget to do. And start small with your resolutions.
The beauty of the housing schedule is that two opportunities for new year's resolutions exist: in January and in August.
