Furry and Finned Friends
Job placement season is coming, and many soon-to-be
graduates are filled with questions about their first professional position in campus housing and student affairs.
"Who will be my boss? Will the students and staff respect
me?" And, perhaps most of all, "Where the heck am I
going to live?" For most, the answer to the last question
is "on campus," and with that comes having to follow the
institutional rules. Through the years, these policies have
been updated to reflect changing times and to help make
the live-in/on staff role more attractive to the best job
candidates.
And the accommodations are becoming more, well,
accommodating. Of the more than 350 institutions that
participated in the 2017 Campus Housing Index survey, 87
percent of those that answered the question said they had
two-bedroom apartments available for staff, and 14 percent
offered three-bedroom ones. When it came to roommates,
82 percent of campuses who responded said that they allow
full-time, live-in professional staff to live with a domestic

partner, regardless of gender. In addition, 96 percent allow
them to live with a same-sex spouse to whom they are legally married, and 63 percent will let them live with relatives
who are not their spouse.
But what about those roommates who aren't the greatest
conversationalists? Fortunately for animal lovers, only 11
percent of the campuses that responded didn't allow pets.
As for the most commonly allowed pets, these are the ones
listed in response to the question asking what pets are allowed as an amenity for full-time, live-in professional staff.
