the concept of a positive university by a
team of Australian scholars who define
positive education as "the development
of educational environments that enable the learner to engage in established
curricula in addition to knowledge and
skills to develop their own and others'
wellbeing." They describe a number of
ways the concepts can be applied within
a university context: using humor or
mindfulness exercises in the classroom,
acknowledging contributions made in
the local community, implementing
social programs that encourage random
acts of kindness, and tapping into the
intrinsic motivation of faculty and staff.
Colleges and universities may be particularly appropriate environments for the
cultivation of well-being. As the authors
note, "Given the high striving culture of
most universities, it is easy for individuals (both students and staff) to neglect
social relationships, emphasize extrinsic motivation (e.g. grades/promotion)
over intrinsic interest (i.e. learning/
motivation), work excessive hours and
engage in other patterns of behaviour
that diminish well-being over both the
short and long term." Most important,
the authors offer specific strategies and
activities to promote positive education
in a residential context: celebrating the
holidays of a wide variety of cultures,
recognizing students' individual
achievements, and encouraging the
