students for misconduct."
Changes in students' rights and
campus responsibilities continued to
affect higher education institutions.
Along with taking up the cause of civil
rights, students worked to improve
the rights of women and LGBTQ
individuals. The change in the legal
voting age from 21 to 18 spurred
students to claim their new freedoms
of choice and expression. The Family Educational Rights and Privacy
Act of 1974 granted them protection
and privacy. One after another, states
raised the legal drinking age from 18
to 21 in the 1980s. As the 21st century
began, more changes occurred with an
increased awareness of mental health
issues and the growing diversity of
students. New focus was put on mandates such as Title IX and the Violence
Against Women Act. There was an
increased awareness of decolonization,
freedom of speech, and social justice.

influenced campus philosophies on

the whole student, providing a place
where students can grow and develop
through social and educational programming. Residence life professionals develop ways to create social and
academic interactions, establish community standards, and address negative behaviors that may occur behind
closed doors. "Due process" and other

terminology reminiscent of judicial
language is now part of the campus
conduct lexicon. Housing and conduct
policies and practices are amended to
support students' inalienable rights as
their interpretations change, and they
address new realities such as legalized
marijuana, concealed carry laws, and
support animals. The world changes.
The philosophies of student housing
and student conduct change with it.

The educational philosophy of today's
conduct process holds that students
should be given the opportunity to reflect
on their actions, relate them to their
goals at their institution (and beyond),
and determine how their actions affect
these goals.
