more visible. But invite students of
other religious backgrounds or your
campus secular student alliance, if
one exists, to hold meetings in residence hall space as well.
I am ____ religion, and I don't fit
in at this party school. What should
I do? Many religious students often
feel isolated, even if they belong to
the predominant religious group on
campus. It is important to steer them
to appropriate student organizations as
well as other activities - for example,
late night programming - that help
them meet other students not interested in the party culture. Offering hall
programming on spirituality, religion,
and secularity will also help students
connect with others.
Why are we talking about these
topics anyway? They will just lead to
disagreements. Help these students
understand that disagreements can be

healthy and do not always constitute a
threat to their own identity.
TS: What are good resources to have
on hand when you are talking to
professional and paraprofessional
staff and training them for having
these conversations?

Babarskis: On Being is a great podcast that role models how to engage
in conversations on topics of values,
spirituality, and religious or secular
identity. Interfaith Youth Core has
some phenomenal resources for how
to have dialogues around different
religious beliefs. Michael Cromartie
and the Ethics & Public Policy Center
have some great resources if someone
is trying to better understand how
religion or faith impacts public life.
Q Ideas (qideas.org) is a website
that has some great videos to spark

conversation from a Protestant/
Evangelical perspective. Hillel's Ask
Big Questions program also provides
some guided conversations to engage
in these topics.

Myhrum: These resources depend
largely on the outcomes of these
conversations, so it is important to
articulate intended outcomes first.
It will be important to distinguish
between conversations and support.
Support would be outside the scope of
a professional or paraprofessional staff
member that does not have extensive
training from an accredited institution.
Training staff to hold conversations
where students get to know each other
can look very similar to dialogue facilitation and moderation training. Campus networks like Sustained Dialogue
and Interfaith Youth Core's Talk Better
