ophy. It felt very punitive and negative.
The prior code used words like victim,
perpetrator, hearing, and disciplinary
action. These words do not have much
of a therapeutic tone, which better
aligns with my philosophy. It is hard to
come into a meeting with someone automatically feeling like they are against
you. I have softened this language to
call hearings meetings and call reporting parties and responding parties by
name. This seems to be resulting in
a less defensive tone when students
meet with me or when their parents
call to ask questions."

The term seems to set up barriers for
a discussion. Speaking of being 'in
violation' seems to be a bit more antiseptic and opens up the conversation."
However, the word also has a positive
connotation that links to the idea of
a student being accountable for their
behavior and recognizing the harm
they've caused. Jerrid Freeman, vice
president for student affairs at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah,
Oklahoma, notes, "I have changed my
terminology to 'responsible' to further
engage students in an educational
discussion about their responsibility."

to revise conduct codes on their own.
"When looking at policy, I think it's
sometimes more difficult to match up
with a personal philosophy because
those efforts are often done in a team.
I have never revised policy by myself,
nor would I," he says. "I often consult
with legal, do focus groups with students, and other stakeholders, consult
with colleagues, read tons of other
sample policies to find other ways of
saying that. I think that they become
more of a conversation with a number
of different philosophies that are hopefully in harmony with one another."

The language used in the communications sent to students should also
be reviewed. Nathan Roberts, director
of residential life at Missouri Western
State University in St. Joseph, explains
that he prefers to use the term "in
violation" rather than "responsible"
in a post-hearing finding. "Students
don't often think they are 'responsible.'

Reviewing and rewriting the
language used in the code of conduct
should include multiple perspectives.
Kevin Carmody, associate dean of
student life and Title IX coordinator at
Ferris State University in Big Rapids,
Michigan, notes that words mean different things to different people, and,
as such, no one person should attempt

Once a conduct philosophy has
been established and the code of conduct has been formalized, professionals can craft, implement, and enforce
specific policies and practices. While
there are standards that have near
universal acceptance, this is again an
opportunity to uniquely identify an institution. Community colleges or four-
