a graduate research group from the
University of North Carolina at Chapel

which was deemed a community project and initiated through CARE, was an
exploratory study for NRLP in which
they built and tested predictive models
to identify peak power days. The use
of peak power can affect the climate,

"We're grateful for the opportunity
to work with university housing on
projects like this."
CARE's initial grant provider for
the peak power project was NRLP, and

their general manager, Ed Miller, was
brought into the discussion regarding
research on consumer perceptions and
student peak power initiatives. The
open, think-tank style of interaction
allowed the group to free-form new
ideas. One example was a discussion
outlining social media and how students engage so easily in that form of
communication. "By collaborating with
CARE, the ability to change customers'
behavior towards electric use during
critical peak times is promising," says
Miller.
In addition to rolling out the peak
power campaign to students, CARE
and NRLP had additional interest
in consumer perceptions of power
providers. The faculty-in-residence

Joseph Cazier, CARE director,
became interested in the promotional
aspects of reducing peak power usage
and in how housing could play a part
in that through its ability to communicate with students in the residence
halls. This interest inspired him to attend a housing meeting to discuss residential learning and the opportunity to
feature peak power events. "Helping
students understand the importance
of energy consumption and its impact
