Provider scale. After more than 700
responses were collected, the scale
was factored to reveal four perception
clusters: Good Citizen, Detrimental
Citizen, Corporate Machine, and Environmental Partner. The model served
as a teaching tool for both community
outreach and residential learning. After the course was complete, an article
on the student consumer research was
published in a leading energy journal.
An additional inter-university
relationship was developed with
Brian Southwell, program director at
RTI International, an independent,
nonprofit research institute. Southwell spoke at Appalachian State and
shared his extensive work in the good
stewardship of energy consumption,
which led to a connection with Cazier,
who introduced him to the faculty-inresidence working on the Peak Impact
project. The faculty member then met
with Southwell, who also teaches a
communication campaigns course at
UNC Chapel Hill, to design an undergraduate and graduate campaigns
class. The final project for the capstone
course was to create a peak power
reduction promotions plan, specific to
messaging for students in the Appalachian State housing environment.
