Career Changers
Members share how their experience at the National Housing
Training Institute informed their work both inside and outside
their offices.

The James C. Grimm National Housing Training Institute (NHTI) is a
week-long professional development
experience coordinated by ACUHO-I,
the volunteer NHTI coordinating
committee, and an all-volunteer
campus host committee. The institute, described by many as intense,
immersive, and career-changing,
utilizes experienced campus housing
professionals as faculty. Faculty serve
as content experts in professional competency areas and mentor a cluster of
three participants before, during, and
after the institute. Participants, from
KNOWLEDGE
DOMAINS
in this article
across the U.S., have three to seven
years of experience and are considered
advancing professionals. They are no
longer new professionals but are not
quite at the mid-level. NHTI was designed to provide participants with the
knowledge, reflection opportunities,
and mentoring to take the next steps
towards mid-level campus housing
positions. The NHTI faculty experience is central to the institute's success. Strong, qualified faculty provide
the content knowledge, professional
experience, and support that is critical
to participants' professional develop-
ment. We asked several 2018 NHTI
faculty to share their thoughts about
their experience, NHTI, and the future
of the housing profession.

Anne Brocker Curry, associate director
of housing for housing information
and marketing at the University of
Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; Olan
Garrett, senior associate director for
residence life at Penn State University in University Park, Pennsylvania;
