Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, knows a
thing or two about building. That includes building a residence hall's
interior design and brand around a treasured campus tradition. For the
2017-18 academic year, the recipient was Stever House, a first-year, coed
residence hall. Inside Stever now are a wide range of large-scale installations celebrating the nearly 100-year-long history of the buggy race, a
competition where student organizations build and race sleek aerodynamic vehicles at speeds up to 35 miles per hour. Among the pieces is
an illustration of the three aspects of the race: team, vehicle, and race
day. Another mural shows the best race times since 1923, a chalkboard
area for new records, a tire, and other elements. One wall is covered
with yearbook covers dating back to 1965 while a window is plastered
with die-cut designs showing the evolution of buggy design. These
pieces and more all keep the race front and center for the 254 residents
of Stever House. It's all downhill from there.
