THE WOOP PROCESS HAS HELPED THE UNIVERSITY OF CAPE TOWN'S
RESIDENCE SECTOR RECOGNIZE THAT RESIDENTIAL FIRST-YEARS SEEK
TO EXCEL ACADEMICALLY AND FORESEE PROCRASTINATION, TIME
MANAGEMENT, DISTRACTIONS, AND NEGATIVE EMOTIONS AS THEIR
GREATEST IMPEDIMENTS.
The WOOP exercise additionally
benefited the University of Cape
Town residence program by providing
insights into the academic goals,
obstacles, and strategies of first-year
students. This knowledge enabled
the staff to provide a more informed
tailoring of residence support strategies
that align with students' expressed
wishes and obstacles. Moving forward,
WOOP is likely to become a standard
part of everyday life on campus.
Residence leaders have discussed how
house committee members could set
a wish for the day, week, or month
and apply the process. In addition,
residence tutors or mentors could
schedule a suitable time to review
WOOP exercises that have been set,
are in progress, or have already been
accomplished by mentees and then
make modifications if necessary. The
WOOP strategy can even be applied to
a small team such as a study group or
writing group session.
The WOOP process is viewed as
a time effective, consultative, and
flexible tool that can, with training, be
offered to residence leaders, mentors,
and tutors to better support not only
first-year residential students but
even themselves and the residence
leadership teams they work in. Within
the first two weeks of moving into
residence, students are ready to
demonstrate academic aspirations,
According to Shaun Mahabeer, "The flexibility
of the WOOP strategy means it can be applied
to more than the academic setting..."

clear plans to try to overcome them.
The WOOP process has helped the
University of Cape Town's residence
sector recognize that residential
first-years seek to excel academically
and foresee procrastination, time
management, distractions, and
negative emotions as their greatest
impediments. Knowing this and
knowing the plans residential firstyears have mapped - including asking
for help, planning their time more
effectively, and working harder -
enables us to direct residence leaders
and structures more appropriately to
responding to the expressed needs of
students.
