needs to look beyond the numbers and
focus on actions to increase belonging
for staff of color. Belonging and inclusion is a two-step process. First, it is an
acknowledgment of the need for community to be created within an ethnic
or race-based staff group. At NYU, in
an effort to make a large institution
feel more personalized, a staff of color
affinity space exists both in the department and the division. Creating social
spaces helps new, transitioning staff to
find someone like themselves and contributes to the staff member developing
a network of support. When leadership
supports the development of these staff
networks through action and providing resources for these groups, it validates the department's investment in
increasing belonging for staff of color.
The department's Staff of Color Network and the division's Administrators
of Color Network enhance support for
staff of color within housing and the
division by implementing a curriculum
that provides supportive, educational,
and social spaces for staff of color.
Second, ongoing training and development for all members of the department demonstrate that this is an evolving process and all members must share
in the ownership of this value. Belonging and inclusion can be taken a step
further to focus on the department's
commitment to increase the competency level of all of its members on topics
related to social justice and inclusion.
Our institution's commitment is further strengthened by requiring all new
staff to complete two zone trainings in
their first six months and to complete
training on facilitating conversations
on topics related to social justice learning. (Zone trainings are hands-on, interactive trainings that provide participants with the knowledge and tools to

connect issues of identity, diversity, and
social justice to their everyday life and
build their capacity to foster a more inclusive environment.)
Work toward fostering an inclusive
and socially just living and learning environment for all members also is done
by the campus's Committee for Diversity and Inclusion. This group creates
programming as well as providing information, education, and resources.
The committee is charged with bringing forth multiple perspectives and
voices in a way respectful of its individuals while at the same time challenging current paradigms to be more
inclusive and equitable for the greater
community structure. Recent initiatives have included four mandatory
professional staff training sessions per
year, large-scale student programming,
and optional professional development
opportunities such as webinars and
discussion of applicable articles and
current events. The group has offered
resources on religion and spirituality
as well as partnering with other organizations such as the Center for Multicultural Education and Programs and
the campus LGBTQ office on university
events based on Martin Luther King Jr.
Day and Ally Week. Finally, it supports
an annual social justice retreat for students, a variety of service opportunities, and a department diversity audit.

NYU has four embedded faculty programs in its residence halls (Faculty
Fellows in Residence, Faculty Affiliates,
Writers in Residence, and Visiting Faculty in Residence), which provide an
important opportunity to select faculty
who share the values of equity and in-
