EACH ONE, TEACH ONE
T
he term mentor is not one I heard
much when I was growing up. My
father served 30 years in the Air Force,
and my mother was a nurse until her
untimely passing at the age of 43. They
definitely encouraged us to pursue our
education, but I cannot say they ever
really connected the dots as to how
other professionals could guide and
encourage us along a career journey.
So, for me, mentors are more about the
people who I think about as I look back
on what has turned out to be a very successful journey. I started working at the
University of California-Davis in 1984
as a temporary employee. The first person who served in a mentoring role was
my friend Amy. She worked in the office next to me and told me we needed
to get involved on campus, take staff development classes, and figure out how
the place worked.
I did just that. I took classes, signed
up for committees, and even joined a
women's bowling league on Thursday
evenings. It turned out there were many
women on the league who had responsible management positions on campus. My new career goal was to be one
of them. When the campus launched
an "Each One, Teach One" program, I
signed up and found myself working
closely with one of those managers as I
prepared my application materials for a
position in student housing.
Six years later, I experienced another very significant mentoring moment when the vice chancellor of student affairs congratulated me on being
promoted to an associate director position. She asked me about my education, and when I responded that I had
only completed two years of college,
she suggested I might want to think
about going back to school. Her message was that I should avoid doors being arbitrarily closed just because I did
not have the credentials that employers
would be looking for. Her words were
all the prompting I needed to go back
to school. Armed with a Bachelor of
Science and an MBA, along with my
work experience, I have gone on to become the executive director of student
housing and an associate vice chancellor for student affairs and currently am
serving as the interim vice chancellor.
There is no doubt that acting upon the
advice of others, which is at the heart
of mentoring, has made a critical difference in my life.

WHY AM I AN ALLY?
T
he most important suggestion I
would offer allies is to ask themselves, "Why am I an ally?" While there
is no one correct answer to this question, I believe an ally needs to serve in
this capacity because they genuinely
feel it's the right thing to do. An ally's
