Talking Stick - January/February 2019 - C20

You want to be factual and not emotional in your responses no matter how
frustrated you may get. I always remember the phrase from an old deodorant commercial: "Don't ever let them
see you sweat." Exuding confidence
without appearing arrogant should be
in your success toolkit.
Be a student of observation: meaning, look and listen more than you
speak. See who are the movers and
shakers and why they are and look at
those who are not rising stars and why
are they not being successful.
Harry LeGrande, Interim
Vice President of Student Affairs,
California State UniversitySan Bernardino

THE MENTORSHIP RELAY

T

he catalyst for me as a young professional of color was ongoing and
consistent mentoring at different stages of my career with a variety of mentors. For professionals of color (who
may not have a large network in the
field or experience that stands out on

paper), mentoring needs to start with
recruitment and continue through the
interview process to ensure a foot in
the door. From there, mentoring needs
to continue as the professional of color
comes on board and advances through
their career to help identify and advocate for growth opportunities. Leadership roles are still rare among professionals of color, and if we want to
cultivate tomorrow's leaders, mentoring must be a consistent arc. I know I
wouldn't be where I am today if a mentor hadn't recruited and recommended
me for an entry-level position. Once in
the door, I had a series of mentors who
encouraged me to grow and take on
new challenges over the years, which
allowed me to advance and never let me
stall. Now in a director role, I remain
fortunate to have mentors who continue to challenge and guide me. And now
I must find ways to open the door for
the next generation.
From the beginning we must ask ourselves if the job description is written in
a way that honors lived as well as professional experience. Does the job description invite applicants of color in, or does it

unintentionally exclude some applicants?
When we think about recruiting diverse
professionals, where are we advertising,
and what networks are we tapping into
to spread the word? During the interview
process, who is at the table, and how do we
engage potential mentors in the process
so candidates can see the possibilities? As
professionals of color are onboarded, do
we provide a strong start by checking in
with new professionals, inviting them to
lunch, sharing professional development
opportunities, and offering formal and
informal mentoring relationships? How
do we ensure this guidance continues in
a long-term pattern? Mentoring, to be
truly meaningful and impactful, should
be a steady thread through a career with
a variety of experiences and a variety of
mentors. As the sun sets on one mentoring relationship, how do we look ahead to
the next one? If we view mentoring as a
relay race with ongoing exchanges from
recruitment to retirement rather than a
one-time, isolated experience, how much
further can we go?
Tonie Miyamoto, Director of
Communications & Sustainability,
