PAYING IT FORWARD

O

ne of the best parts of my job has
come from being a mentor to students. While working at a predominantly white institution, this role has
proven to have a much larger effect
than I initially thought it would, but it's
a task I gladly take on. From doing this,
I have learned a lot about the students I
work with, but I have also learned more
about myself.

"I look back on the
contributions my own
mentors made for me
and want to be able to
do the same for the
new generation."
~Adonis Thompson (above right)

The mentor opportunity comes
in many different forms. It happens
as an outlet for students who work in
the department, advising student organizations, and random interactions
throughout the year. Some of the most
impactful work has come from dealing
with students who are going through
the student conduct process. These students have made mistakes, and, as a part
of their sanction, they were assigned
to me for mentoring. Usually they are
required to meet three times in the
semester and then they can move on.
Oftentimes they have wanted to continue meeting throughout the year. Some
have even continued until they graduated. Being able to talk with them about
what got them in the situation and how
to build from that point is where the focus lies. I've always been told it is easier
to speak with someone you can relate
to and being able to talk to a student
instead of at them has made a world of
difference in establishing a connection.
I look back on the contributions my
own mentors made for me and want
to be able to do the same for the new
generation. It is important to be able to
set an example of what you can do and
show it is possible to be successful in
avenues you have been told or believed

were closed to you. Working with student athletes has opened up many new
connections as well. I work hard to
make sure they know they have an outlet outside their typical circle. It is my
goal to push my mentees in and out of
the classroom, to make sure they have a
plan for their futures, and to give them
a sounding board when times get tough.
Being a mentor has given me a
chance to pay it forward to the great
men and women who helped to push
me along the way while I was in college.
I never want a student to feel they are
alone in this journey, that a mistake is
the end of the road, or they can't make
it. At the end of the day, they are the
reasons I do what I do.
Adonis Thompson, Associate
Director of Residence Life for
Operations, Arkansas State
University

UNWRITTEN STRATEGIES

T

he secret to a successful career in
campus housing and navigating
campus politics is to do great work, understand your sphere of influence, and
know where you fit within the organization. Unfortunately, most of the time
what you need to know will never be
written down. I have used the following
strategies to guide my 17-year career.
First is to get to know your boss. On
your first day of work, it is essential you
schedule a meeting to become familiar
with how your supervisor likes to communicate. Determine how they prefer
to correspond. Also, glean how often
they want status updates from you and
with how much detail. Until you have
this information, over-communicate
