from across the country. By stepping
out of my comfort zone, I also started to
interact with other professionals of color on my campus who worked outside
my department.
As I look back, I am proud to be
known for the good work I do and not
only for longevity. It took a while, but
I no longer question why I'm here. It
is rewarding to see more professionals
of color in upper-level positions than
when I started. When I get together
with other professionals of color, one of
the topics is how to encourage and support the younger generation. I actively
reach out to professionals of color to get
them involved at the beginning of their
career, help them navigate road blocks,
and let them know there is support.

of Student Affairs Operations,

HEARTENED BY
GROWING NUMBERS

M
me seriously, only to find out they just
needed a minority on the committee.
I was stretched too thin and felt burnt
out. But, like a solid professional, I just
charged along and made it work.
Around this time, I started to get involved with ACUHO-I, which allowed
me to engage in activities outside my
campus. There is truth to the saying
you can't be a prophet in your own land.
I took my show on the road and started contributing back to the profession.
Through ACUHO-I, I started to network with other professionals of color
24

y 34-year career in student affairs
and higher education would not
have been as successful without the
benefit of the individuals who were my
mentors, especially early in my career.
When I was a first-generation Asian
Pacific American (APA) college graduate starting off in the field of student
affairs in the 1980s, the number of APAs
in leadership positions was in the low
single digits. Student affairs associations
did not yet have the numbers or interest to have networks or communities
focused solely on issues for APAs in our
field. At that time, professionals of color
tended to be lumped together in affirmative action groups or minority caucuses.
I discovered I needed mentorship
not only as a neophyte student affairs

professional but more specifically as a
new APA professional. On top of typical challenges related to navigating a
career, issues were coming up in my
work environment based on racism and
stereotypes of APAs. I needed someone
who understood what it was like to be
in my shoes to be a mentor, coach, and
confidant. Finding a good mentor is
hard to begin with, but finding someone who can also understand how race,
ethnicity, and culture impact both personal and professional development
was especially challenging.
Over the years, my mentors have included leaders at all levels, but I've also
benefited from guidance outside my
field. Some have been APA, but I've also
found great mentors whose own backgrounds are similar to mine and have
experience in being under-represented
in any of a number of different areas.
Over the years, my mentors have also
included an entertainment field executive, a nun, and a surfing ethnographer.
These benefits came most in two
areas. First was having someone to listen, understand, and provide guidance
in a safe space for day-to-day dealings
and future planning. I was fortunate
to have mentors I could call anytime
to seek advice or consultation, vent, or
just hear a friendly voice. Second was
someone to be an ally and advocate in
meetings, at conferences, or when career opportunities were available. One
of my mentors would tell me, "If you
don't tell your own story, others will
make it up for you." These words were
invaluable for me as an APA who was
brought up culturally in a "don't boast
about your achievements" family and
ethnic environment.
I'm heartened by the growing number of APA undergraduates taking on
