"Culturally effective organizations prioritize diversity and
inclusion by fostering a healthy climate, emphasizing
representation, and focusing on education."
~Vicka Bell-Robinson

due to their identities, might be impacted differently by negative political
events in the environment. They take
on an organizational leadership for
educating others about diversity, as to
not burden those individuals with that
responsibility.
Residential leaders must recognize
the campus is home to both students
and staff. We must aim to create organizations that foster a healthy climate,
emphasize representation, and focus on
education. Not every professional has
the will or patience to interact with students through the lens of their residential experience. We employ a sensitivity
unmatched and unseen in other functional areas. Those of us in leadership
positions must utilize a similar sensitivity with the staff we supervise. If we fail,
we will continue to experience a decline
in the presence of professionals of color
in housing and residence life as well as
student affairs, which would be a disservice to our present and future students
and the world in which we live.
Vicka Bell-Robinson, Director
of Residence Life, Miami University

TAKING THE INITIATIVE

A

t a special reception for past
SEAHO presidents, I recognized
the vice president of student affairs at
the University of Louisville, Tom Jackson, Jr., who was also a black male. I
introduced myself and mentioned I
had been following his career for several years, and it was an honor to finally

meet him. Without hesitation, he offered to meet with me while I was attending the three-day conference. On
the very last day of the conference, this
former ACPA president and current
chief student affairs officer took two full
hours out of his day to spend with me.
It was the very first time in my career
when someone of his caliber looked at
me and said, "You are very talented and
smart and do not ever give up on your
goals. You may have experiences that
will temporarily derail them, but you
will accomplish all of them eventually." I still follow Dr. Jackson, currently
president of Black Hills State University in South Dakota. Mentorship can be
an ongoing relationship or a two-hour
sit down. Young professionals of color
need to take the initiative, not wait for it
to be handed to them.

In my profession, there have not
been many black males to approach, so
I closely watch professionals I admire
and emulate some of their best practices. As for my role as a mentor, I have
embraced the opportunity to mentor
younger black males, but also anyone
else with the desire to be the best version of themselves. When serving as
a mentor to younger professionals of
color, I want them to understand they
must work extremely hard every day
because nothing will be given to them.
I also challenge younger professionals
to practice inclusivity when building a
professional networking system.
Leon McClinton, Jr., Director
of Housing & Residential Life,
Oklahoma State University
