The student affairs profession attracts young people from all walks of
life through its hands-on approach to
student development. Whether it is
the mentorship students receive from
housing professionals, the support or
encouragement they get from an academic counselor, or leadership guidance from a student activities advisor,
student affairs draws in young professionals. As a result, waves of students
make their way into higher education
and student affairs programs each year
hoping to give back or pay it forward to
a new generation of college students.

and adjudicate conduct hearings. What
other position provides opportunities
in such a vibrant palette? Housing programs provide the overarching context
allowing professionals to understand
and seamlessly transition into other
student affairs departments such as
student activities, career services, conduct, orientation, first-year experience,
leadership and service, fraternity and
sorority life, academic advisement, and
even counseling services. It is no wonder so many deans of students and vice
presidents of student affairs come from
the housing ranks.

The housing profession serves as
a unique and essential gateway to this
path. Historically it provides an added
layer of financial stability through benefits like housing, meal plans, flexible
work hours, and professional development funds. This is why, whether as a
graduate assistant or a full-time professional, housing programs tend to be a
legitimate starting point for professionals of color who want to pursue a career
in higher education and student affairs.

However, as demographic changes continue to trend toward more and
more students of color attending college
both domestically and internationally,
higher education and student affairs
must position themselves to have professionals of color not only in entry-level positions, but also as visible campus
leaders. Housing programs are uniquely positioned to provide professionals,
especially those of color, many of the
necessary and essential skills needed to
build a comprehensive student affairs
portfolio. Because of this, housing has
a special responsibility to help develop, promote, and increase the network
of professionals of color into campus
leadership positions. The following
strategies are vital steps in achieving
such a goal.

Housing staff benefit from managing residential communities because
the high levels of challenge and professional autonomy help them develop a strong leadership acumen. These
roles also allow them to experiment
with almost every other aspect of student affairs within the context of one
position. Consider the wide range of
responsibilities housing professionals
navigate. They develop community,
create programs, advise hall governance, supervise RAs and graduate
professionals, present on a myriad of
topics, shape communications, provide
academic and career advisement, manage on-call crisis response, and counsel
students in distress, mediate conflicts,

Promote Housing as
a Career Launching Pad
Housing is one of the best places to
begin a student affairs career. Am I biased? Absolutely! Does that matter?
No. Why? Because, as I used to tell my
student affairs colleagues, if we were a
solar system, housing would be the sun.

. . . leadership comes
in all shapes, sizes,
and colors. Unlike their
white counterparts,
professionals of
color learn how to
lead under added
scrutiny and through
a racialized or
internationalized lens.
Everything revolves around housing.
They all laughed, but I wasn't kidding.
Second only to their academic experience - what major they pursue and
what classes they take - the question
on the mind of an incoming student is
where are they going to live. Housing is
a student's new home away from home
and the place they go to for comfort,
peace, quiet, safety, sleep, relationships,
and connection. It is the place where
they learn how to truly take care of
themselves and how to navigate meaningful relationships outside of their familial environment.
Unlike other areas of student affairs, housing is the place where professionals get to see students at both their
best and worst. These experiences and
this knowledge provide exceptional
insight and can position housing professionals to be more knowledgeable
than their student affairs counterparts
about the overall college student experience. I believe this makes for a more
well-rounded and grounded profes-
