RECOVERY HOUSING ADAPTS
TO THE OPIOID CRISIS
T
he opioid epidemic, which began in
the 1990s due to an increase in prescribing opioids, has posed the question:
How can we help people recover from
this crisis? Higher education institutions
across the country are beginning to see
how recovery programs can lead students
to excel and positively impact future generations struggling with substance abuse.
In 1988, five years after establishing its
recovery program, Rutgers University in
New Brunswick, New Jersey, became the
first college in the country to offer students on-campus recovery housing. The
12-month program provides activities for
students in order to bring them together
into a sober support network, with the
help of experienced staff, Alcohol and
Drug Abuse Program (ADAP) counselors,
and access to university resources.
The program supports students in
recovery from all substance abuse disorders. According to Lisa Laitman, director
of ADAP, it is important to "continuously
review and update not only (Rutgers')
policies and procedures for students in
recovery, but also for the community as
a whole. As soon as we became aware of
the increase in opioid misuse, we began
to increase the attention paid to our
prevention, education, intervention, and
referral to treatment efforts to address the
opioid epidemic. For example, we have a
new information campaign that launched
in November 2018 to educate students
about opioid misuse."
As for the results of the recovery
housing, Dan Morrison, executive director
of residence life, notes that graduating
members "state that the program 'saved
their life,' 'enabled them to cope with
college stress in a positive manner,' and
that it was 'their last attempt' at living a
fulfilling life."
Growth in the support of students
struggling with substance abuse is apparent when looking at the amount of recovery housing popping up at institutions
across the country. In the fall of 2018,
Michigan State University in East Lansing
proudly established its first on-campus
recovery housing. Ray Gasser, director
of residence education and housing services, notes that "colleges and universities are uniquely positioned to intervene
early and provide recovery supports to
students," and the results have already
proved promising, with student testimonials affirming that "The group made me
feel like I belonged, and gave me a sense
of purpose. I don't think I would have
graduated without the support of the
Collegiate Recovery Community."
