experience. At the University of Central Arkansas (UCA) in Conway, for
example, residents can engage in civic
action through community beautification programs where students plant
trees or flowers at local parks and in
their own residence hall greenspaces.
Other similar programs include local
highway cleanup projects, where student groups adopt a highway or street
and pledge to keep it litter free.
Craig Seager, associate director for
housing at UCA, explains that engagement programs are designed to give
residential students opportunities to
recognize that they can make a difference within the local community and
are a colorful thread in the tapestry of
society. As Seager shares, "This kind
of civic service provides many positive
developmental outcomes, as well as
instills a sense of belonging to the
local community at large, as well as
the university."
Another institution utilizing civic
engagement programming to enhance resident satisfaction is Western Michigan University (WMU) in
Kalamazoo. At WMU, students in the
College of Aviation residence hall, also
known as Henry Hall, have created
a civic engagement program around
the school's value of sustainability.
This effort has increased residential
satisfaction while simultaneously honoring a part of the department's goal
of increasing awareness of recycling
and sustainability benefits. Residents
have also participated in the Compost
Program, working with the campus's landscaping services to create
a garden that both staff and Henry
Hall residents can tend. The idea of
this project is to allow Henry Hall
residents to feel pride and ownership
in a project that requires attentiveness
and investment in one's community.
Hall Director Allie Nixon explains that
the project is making residents feel
stronger connections to their home.
"Our students are helping the world
continue to reach new flights, but still
care to stay grounded."
Civic engagement opportunities
can be adapted to any program that
provides a hands-on service learning opportunity that helps residents
develop pride in their community by
intentionally investing in it. The civic
engagement program also provides
an open space that allows residents to
share their ideas, contribute based on
their own willingness, and learn about
their peers in a unique setting.
