Stanford Renames Residence Hall for a Trailblazing Astronaut

Stanford University in California
announced last February that one
of its first-year residence halls,
Serra House, would be renamed
for astronaut Sally Ride, who
earned two undergraduate degrees (English and physics) and
two graduate degrees in physics
from Stanford between 1970
and 1978 before becoming the
first American woman to fly in
space in 1983. She flew a second
mission on the Challenger space
shuttle in 1984. In 2013, she
received the Presidential Medal of
Freedom posthumously.
Stanford is just one example
of campuses that are revisiting
campus building names and
landmarks through a new historical context. Serra House
originally was named for Father Junipero Serra who
was instrumental in the California mission system. In a
report published in the Stanford News (9-13-2018) on the
proposed removal of his name from parts of campus, the
university stated, "Because the mission system's violence
against California Native Americans is part of the history
and memory of current members of the community, we
believe that features named for Junipero Serra, who was
the architect and leader of the mission system, are in
tension with [Stanford's] goal of full inclusion."
Current residents led the new naming process, citing
Ride's Stanford degrees as well as her career as a "professor,
researcher, investigator, advisor, entrepreneur [and] author."
In an article in the Stanford Daily (2-28-2018), one student
resident noted how Ride "is an extremely incredible role
model for so many different types of students on this campus. From women to LGBTQ students, to STEM students,
to really anyone who wants to trailblaze in whatever they're
interested in. I'm so grateful this name change will inspire
students to follow in her footsteps."

ON THE COVER
The Village at the University of Southern California is home to nearly 2,500 beds
as well as other multi-use spaces. Despite all that is going on, purposeful design
allows clear lines of sight along either side of a central walkway. It's just one
example of subtle ways architects and campus planners incorporate security
