P3s On the Plate
The Chronicle of Higher Education recently
shared a snapshot of the future of public-private
partnerships inside higher ed. With responses
from 249 presidents, provosts, and chief financial officers, they captured areas where institutions are interested in partnering, and, not
surprisingly, housing was in the mix, with 39
percent responding in the affirmative. Approximately half the institutions that took the survey
had enrollments of fewer than 2,000 students.

NEWS AND NOTES
Students experiencing homelessness in Massachusetts are finding
relief in campus residence halls as part of a new program. In
February, 20 college students were moved into residence halls on
four public campuses: Bridgewater State University, Framingham
State University, Worcester State University, and the University
of Massachusetts Lowell. The program was spurred, in part, by
survey results from a Wisconsin HOPE Lab 2017 survey showing
that 13 percent of community college students in Massachusetts
had experienced homelessness in the past year, as did 10 percent
of students attending one of the state's four-year campuses.

The Cheddar broadcast company will soon launch a new network
aimed at the college student market. CheddarU, starting in late
2019, will deliver free headline news coverage as well as interviews with business executives, influencers, and other student
special features. The new network comes after Cheddar acquired

TALKING STICK

LaSalle University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is the latest
campus to allow pets to live in one of its residence halls.
Students, with the approval of roommates, will be allowed
to keep a dog that weighs less than 30 pounds in St. George
Hall, a 55-bed hall reserved for upper-division students.
The plan was inspired by the popularity of another program
where faculty and staff would bring their pets to campus to
interact with students. The Philadelphia Inquirer (February
22, 2019) quoted Dawn Soufleris, LaSalle's vice president of
student affairs, as saying, "The onslaught of students who
wanted to come out and pet our pets was overwhelming.
We're talking hundreds of students coming out. That joy
and calmness, the sheer happiness,
made us think, you know what,
we might want to look at this
a little more closely."
