First, one should actively listen,
even if the feedback is difficult to
receive. Remain open and alert to
the full message, asking questions if
clarity is needed and responding with
paraphrasing to show that you have
understood.
Second, when receiving feedback,
never argue, even if the circumstances
do not represent what really happened.
Limit defensiveness. Hold back retorts.
Assume the good. Accept the feedback
and express gratitude for the effort
made to help you improve.
Third, evaluate slowly; you
may need a day or two to consider
the feedback and its merits to determine whether the feedback has
validity and how you might address
the issues raised.
The fourth suggestion is to
be mindful, keeping your mind open
to observing your own behavior,
giving yourself the opportunity to
make corrections and feel good about
your progress.
Rewarding with Recognition
Lest you think that daily supervision is
largely about catching behaviors that
need to be changed, supervisors also
enjoy the position of catching students
doing things well. Positive feedback,
specifically delivered, is motivating.
For example, "Julia, you're doing a
great job" is not as effective as "Julia, I noticed how quickly you solved
that client's problem by asking good
questions and using the techniques we
taught you in training." This second
example is more effective because it
describes the specific behaviors and reinforces the learning. Julia would likely
feel far more valued knowing that her

supervisor had observed the work and
could specifically describe what she
did well. Platitudes are not helpful.
Recognizing your student employees'
specific accomplishments shows them
that you are paying attention and
motivating them to continue to excel.
Praise can be shared individually,
during team huddles or larger staff
meetings or through official recognition events. Recognition can be fun as
well as serious.
